1. INTRODUCTION TO MULTIVU
-----------------------
MultiVu (tm) Ver. 1.0 is a Microsoft Windows (tm) hosted text file
viewer. MultiVu will run under Windows 3.0 and 3.1 and is intended
to be upward compatible to 32-bit versions as well.
MultiVu has a number of powerful features which will make it a
handy tool for technical professionals, business persons, in fact all
computer users who need to look at text files regularly in their
work.
Some of these features include:
Ability to view files up to 2 GB in size
File and text find functions
Drag 'n' drop support
File 'preload' for smooth scrolling
Load, search, or print while browsing
Bookmarks in each open file
Separate screen and printer fonts
Customized Multiple Document Interface
2. SHAREWARE CONCEPT
-----------------
"Shareware" is a term used to describe a system for distribution of
software. Under the shareware concept, software may be freely
copied and passed along to others, or distributed through bulletin
board systems, shareware distribution companies, etc.
As a recipient of a shareware program, you may use the software for
a short trial period to determine if it meets your needs. If it
does, you pay the registration fee. By paying the fee, you are
granted the right to retain the software for your use. If the
software is not suitable, then you may discard it.
The shareware system provides substantial benefits to the computing
community (of which YOU are a member):
a) You get to try out the software BEFORE you buy it so you know
exactly what you're buying.
b) Shareware is substantially less expensive than most commercial
programs. You don't pay for costly marketing programs and
fancy packaging.
c) You get access to a MUCH broader base of available programs.
Thousands of excellent programs have been written by expert
programmers who would never consider marketing commercially.
Through the concept of shareware, these people make their
programs available to the community. Usually, all they ask in
return is a small fee to reward them for the time and effort
they've put into the program.
The system is based entirely on the honor system, and generally
works quite well. (Most people are honest and wouldn't violate the
trust placed in them by the author of the software.)
Shareware is NOT free software - the author counts on your
integrity. See Why and How to Become a Registered User.
You are encouraged to copy this software and pass it along to
others who may be interested in using it.

5. INSTALLATION
------------
Install the program by following these steps:
a) Copy the file MULTVU10.ZIP to the directory of your choice
b) Extract the compressed contents by using the shareware
decompression program PKUNZIP. If you don't have a copy,
you can probably get one where you obtained MultiVu. You can
download it from most BBSs and info services, e.g., CompuServe.
c) Add MultiVu to any Windows program group, e.g., Accessories.
[Consult your Windows user manual or select Help from the
Program Manager.] MultiVu's icons and bitmaps are imbedded in
the executable file. They will automatically appear when the
program is run.
d) If you want to have a file viewer at the ready throughout a
Windows session, add MultiVu to your Startup group or add
MULTIVU.EXE (prefixed with the directory where you placed
it) to the LOAD= command in your WIN.INI file.
e) To keep MultiVu out of the way, you may check off Run
Minimized in the properties dialog presented when you add
MultiVu to a program group. This will allow you to take
full advantage of MultiVu's drag 'n' drop support.
f) If you are running Windows 3.0, make sure the files COMMDLG.DLL
and SHELL.DLL are in the Windows directory on your hard disk drive
or the SYSTEM subdirectory under your Windows directory. These
files are freely distributed and can be downloaded from information
services, such as CompuServe.
g) Copy the file MULTIVU.INI to the Windows directory on your hard
disk drive. This file contains default settings for MultiVu's
operation. You may customize these settings. See USAGE NOTES below.
6. USAGE NOTES
-----------
CUSTOMIZING THE TOOL
On startup, MultiVu looks for a file called MULTIVU.INI in
your WINDOWS directory. It currently has three sections,
indicated by a heading enclosed in square brackets:
[DIRECTORIES], [FILES], and [FORMAT].
Each of the following paragraphs addresses one of these sections.
Directories
-----------
MultiVu maintains relatively small temporary files on your
hard disk or network file server. This can be a problem for
network administrators trying to avoid multiuser conflicts.
To solve this problem, you can specify the appropriate
directory for temporary files by placing two lines in the
MULTIVU.INI file, like the following:
[DIRECTORIES]
MVPATH=c:\winapps\junk
An alternative solution is to set the environment variable
MVPATH to the directory where temporary files should be
stored.
Files
-----
The File Open and Scan Disk dialogs present a list of file
types to which the dialog's action is restricted, e.g., Text
Files. You can set the default file type by placing three
lines in the MULTIVU.INI file, like the following:
[FILES]
firsttag="C++ Files"
firstpattern="*.cpp;*.hpp"
Both strings must be in double quotes. The firsttag string
is the text that will appear in the file type combo box.
The firstpattern string represents the filename(s) and/or
extension(s) to which the dialog's action will be
restricted. Multiple patterns must be delimited by
semi colons.
Format
------
On displaying and printing a document, MultiVu automatically
converts each tab to a specified number of spaces. This
conversion is, by default, 5 spaces per tab. You can
override that with your own default by placing in the
MULTIVU.INI file two lines, like the following:
[FORMAT]
tabspaces=3
OPENING FILES
There are two methods for opening files with MultiVu. With
drag 'n' drop, you can select one or more files from the
Windows File Manager or third party File Manager
replacement. It must be a drag 'n' drop server.
You may drag these files to the MultiVu icon (if running
minimized) or to any part of the MultiVu main window, if the
window is visible. You must keep the left mouse button down
until you reach the target area, then release it.
MultiVu also provides the common File Open dialog box,
accessible from the File menu, Open option.
