  49. MultiVu (tm) Ver. 1.0 is a Microsoft Windows (tm) hosted text file
  50. viewer.  MultiVu will run under Windows 3.0 and 3.1 and is intended
  51. to be upward compatible to 32-bit versions as well.
  52.  
  53. MultiVu has a number of powerful features which will make it a
  54. handy tool for technical professionals, business persons, in fact all
  55. computer users who need to look at text files regularly in their
  56. work.

  62.    Drag 'n' drop support

  70. 2.  SHAREWARE CONCEPT
  71.     -----------------

  73. "Shareware" is a term used to describe a system for distribution of
  74. software.  Under the shareware concept, software may be freely
  75. copied and passed along to others, or distributed through bulletin
  76. board systems, shareware distribution companies, etc.
  77.  
  78. As a recipient of a shareware program, you may use the software for
  79. a short trial period to determine if it meets your needs.  If it
  80. does, you pay the registration fee.  By paying the fee, you are
  81. granted the right to retain the software for your use.  If the
  82. software is not suitable, then you may discard it.
  83.  
  84. The shareware system provides substantial benefits to the computing
  85. community (of which YOU are a member):
  86.  
  87.  a) You get to try out the software BEFORE you buy it so you know
  88.     exactly what you're buying.
  89.  
  90.  b) Shareware is substantially less expensive than most commercial
  91.     programs.  You don't pay for costly marketing programs and
  92.     fancy packaging.
  93.  
  94.  c) You get access to a MUCH broader base of available programs.
  95.     Thousands of excellent programs have been written by expert
  96.     programmers who would never consider marketing commercially.
  97. Through the concept of shareware, these people make their
  98. programs available to the community.  Usually, all they ask in
  99. return is a small fee to reward them for the time and effort
  100. they've put into the program.

  102. The system is based entirely on the honor system, and generally
  103. works quite well.  (Most people are honest and wouldn't violate the
  104. trust placed in them by the author of the software.)

  137. 5.  INSTALLATION
  138.     ------------

  140. Install the program by following these steps:
  141.  
  142. a) Copy the file MULTVU10.ZIP to the directory of your choice
  143.  
  144. b) Extract the compressed contents by using the shareware
  145.    decompression program PKUNZIP.  If you don't have a copy,
  146.    you can probably get one where you obtained MultiVu.  You can
  147.    download it from most BBSs and info services, e.g., CompuServe.
  148.    
  149. c) Add MultiVu to any Windows program group, e.g., Accessories.
  150.    [Consult your Windows user manual or select Help from the
  151.    Program Manager.]  MultiVu's icons and bitmaps are imbedded in
  152.    the executable file.  They will automatically appear when the
  153.    program is run.
  154.  
  155. d) If you want to have a file viewer at the ready throughout a
  156.    Windows session, add MultiVu to your Startup group or add
  157.    MULTIVU.EXE (prefixed with the directory where you placed
  158.    it) to the LOAD= command in your WIN.INI file.
  159.  
  160. e) To keep MultiVu out of the way, you may check off Run 
  161.    Minimized in the properties dialog presented when you add 
  162.    MultiVu to a program group.  This will allow you to take 
  163.    full advantage of MultiVu's drag 'n' drop support.
  164.  
  165. f) If you are running Windows 3.0, make sure the files COMMDLG.DLL
  166.    and SHELL.DLL are in the Windows directory on your hard disk drive
  167.    or the SYSTEM subdirectory under your Windows directory.  These
  168.    files are freely distributed and can be downloaded from information
  169.    services, such as CompuServe.
  170.  
  171. g) Copy the file MULTIVU.INI to the Windows directory on your hard
  172.    disk drive.  This file contains default settings for MultiVu's
  173.    operation.  You may customize these settings.  See USAGE NOTES below.
  174. 6.  USAGE NOTES
  175.     -----------
  176.  
  177. CUSTOMIZING THE TOOL
  178.  
  179. On startup, MultiVu looks for a file called MULTIVU.INI in 
  180. your WINDOWS directory.  It currently has three sections, 
  181. indicated by a heading enclosed in square brackets:
  182.  
  183. [DIRECTORIES], [FILES], and [FORMAT].
  184.  
  185. Each of the following paragraphs addresses one of these sections.
  186.  
  187.  
  188. Directories
  189. -----------
  190. MultiVu maintains relatively small temporary files on your 
  191. hard disk or network file server.  This can be a problem for 
  192. network administrators trying to avoid multiuser conflicts.
  193. To solve this problem, you can specify the appropriate 
  194. directory for temporary files by placing two lines in the 
  195. MULTIVU.INI file, like the following:
  196.  
  197. [DIRECTORIES]
  198. MVPATH=c:\winapps\junk
  199.  
  200. An alternative solution is to set the environment variable 
  201. MVPATH to the directory where temporary files should be 
  202. stored.
  203.  
  204.  
  205. Files
  206. -----
  207. The File Open and Scan Disk dialogs present a list of file 
  208. types to which the dialog's action is restricted, e.g., Text 
  209. Files.  You can set the default file type by placing three 
  210. lines in the MULTIVU.INI file, like the following:
  211.  
  212. [FILES]
  213. firsttag="C++ Files"
  214. firstpattern="*.cpp;*.hpp"
  215.  
  216. Both strings must be in double quotes.  The firsttag string 
  217. is the text that will appear in the file type combo box.  
  218. The firstpattern string represents the filename(s) and/or 
  219. extension(s) to which the dialog's action will be 
  220. restricted.  Multiple patterns must be delimited by 
  221. semi colons.
  222. Format
  223. ------
  224. On displaying and printing a document, MultiVu automatically 
  225.  
  226. converts each tab to a specified number of spaces.  This 
  227. conversion is, by default, 5 spaces per tab.  You can 
  228. override that with your own default by placing in the 
  229. MULTIVU.INI file two lines, like the following:
  230.  
  231. [FORMAT]
  232. tabspaces=3
  233. OPENING FILES
  234.  
  235. There are two methods for opening files with MultiVu.  With 
  236. drag 'n' drop, you can select one or more files from the 
  237. Windows File Manager or third party File Manager 
  238. replacement.  It must be a drag 'n' drop server.
  239.  
  240. You may drag these files to the MultiVu icon (if running 
  241. minimized) or to any part of the MultiVu main window, if the 
  242. window is visible.  You must keep the left mouse button down 
  243. until you reach the target area, then release it.
  244.  
  245. MultiVu also provides the common File Open dialog box, 
  246. accessible from the File menu, Open option.

  292. MultiVu (tm) is a copyrighted software package. It is being distributed
  293. as user supported shareware. By using or distributing this package, you
  294. agree to the following:

  296. You are granted a limited license to try this program, MultiVu, for
  297. 30 days. If you find this software useful and wish to continue using
  298. it after the 30 day evaluation period, you must pay the registration
  299. fee.  Registration for use on a single personal computer is $19.00.
  300. You may, instead, register for installation on a local area network
  301. (LAN) server.  The LAN registration fee of $49 permits an unlimited
  302. number of concurrent users on the registered server.  Shipping and
  303. Handling is additional for either type of license.

  305. Register for each personal computer and each LAN server on which
